Web 2.0 Dating Games: How local geeks and nerds are hooking up… or not

Geek Sex: Resistor P0rnSo, I admit, it’s really late and I had a sudden urge to look for a geek/nerd oriented personals website and so I searched and stumbled upon this fantastic article in SF Gate by Violet Blue. Here’s a quote:

“Many geeks are immune to the lure of signing up for yet another site and making yet another profile — hey, we all did that on Tribe, on Orkut, on yawn-worthy Facebook — an apathy that inspired the comforting site Useless Account. If only there were a snarkier, more 2.0 way to meet and flirt about Google algorithm theories

And Violet manages to cover quite a few snarky 2.0 ways that the “geekerati” (of SF at least) are finding to find each other… in the flesh… taking the online offline, etc. Do you think the very group known to be the most socially awkward and inept are perhaps overcompensating with this focus on social-ness that web 2.0 seems to connotate? I’m also beginning to wonder whether geek-chic is reaching a kind of crescendo… Since it is now so super-cool to be a geek, it becomes - you know - not as cool anymore… In the mid nineties it became super cool to be gay or at least bi for a spell in high school or college, so for an actual gay person, one’s true homo credentials kind of came into question with all these imposters latching onto the newly-cooled gay identity. Seems the same problem is happening with newly cooled geek or nerd identity.
