FDA Insists: No Donations of Gay Blood; It’s Too Icky

This has always bothered me. Why don’t they simply ask everyone, “Do you have HIV or any other blood-borne pathogens such as (list of stuff)?” If they say no, they can donate. If they don’t know, they can’t donate this time and they are offered a free and anonymous, confidential HIV test. Obviously people who do have these diseases would be told they cannot donate blood. Even after that, they BETTER BE TESTING ALL THE BLOOD THEY GET!
A very large portion of people with HIV and other diseases that a blood transfer recipient would rather not contract are totally unaware of their infection. I understand they like to filter out blood that is likely to be unusable, but that would be better accomplished by asking potential donors direct questions as I stated above. At this point, publically admitted gayness is not a relevant factor in filtering out donors who are likely to be carrying HIV or other diseases.

Ewwww! Gay blood is particularly icky. If spilled, it can possibly creep up one’s leg and into the anus. It can also turn you gay if you make eye contact with it.
